Quake II on PS5X

Quake II was the first title the developer showed running on PS5X for Xbox Series X. It is the best-documented title in the compatibility list — and the reference point for what "playable" means in an experimental emulator.

What we know

  • Gameplay boots and renders on Xbox Series X inside Developer Mode.
  • Performance hovers around 20–45 FPS in the developer's footage, with noticeable input lag in heavier moments.
  • Audio and controller input work — no keyboard/mouse or audio adapter needed.
  • As a 1997 engine title (modern re-release), it is far lighter than current-gen games, which is exactly why the developer chose it as the first demo target.
What we don't know yet: a measured internal resolution, consistent FPS across maps, and save/load reliability. Expect rough edges — this is a proof of concept, not a finished port.

What to expect when you run it

Run it well

  • Use a legally obtained copy of Quake II for PS5 — PS5X ships with no games.
  • Put the game folder inside PS5X's scan path (it looks for eboot.bin).
  • If framerate dips, lower the texture-quality setting — the emulator trades texture detail for memory headroom inside the 5GB Developer Mode budget.

Known limitations

  • Input lag is visible in demo footage; don't expect tournament-grade response.
  • Series S performance is unverified.
  • Big moments may dip below 20 FPS as the DirectX 12 translation layer matures.
