The PS5X emulator (a port of the open-source KytyPS5) now boots PlayStation 5 games on Xbox Series X|S inside Microsoft's official Developer Mode. This guide covers installation step by step, the real compatibility list, and honest performance numbers.
PS5X is an experimental, open-source port of the KytyPS5 PlayStation 5 emulator to Xbox Series X|S. It was created by developer Devran Cosmo Uenal, who first demonstrated PS5 games running on an Xbox in September 2026, and who describes the project as research aimed at PS5 homebrew and backups of games people legally own.
Sony and Microsoft built the current generation on closely matched AMD hardware: both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S use eight Zen 2 CPU cores, RDNA 2 graphics and 16GB of GDDR6 memory, and PS5 games are compiled for the same x86-64 architecture as PCs. Instead of recreating PS5 hardware in software, KytyPS5 runs PS5 code directly on the host CPU — a compatibility layer that behaves like a translator.
On PC, KytyPS5 translates PS5 graphics commands and shaders to Vulkan. Xbox Developer Mode has no Vulkan support, so PS5X adds a Direct3D 12 renderer and translates shaders with Mesa's spirv_to_dxil. Every fix the PC project ships has to be re-adapted for DirectX before PS5X can use it — which is why Xbox compatibility always trails the PC version.
PS5X ships without any PS5 firmware or decryption keys, and the project requires legally obtained game files. It is not affiliated with Sony Interactive Entertainment or Microsoft.

The project moved from a single YouTube demonstration to public experimental builds in about six weeks.
Devran Cosmo Uenal boots the PS5 version of Quake II on an Xbox Series X and plays it with an Xbox controller, through his PS5X port of KytyPS5.
Quake II, GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd and Marvel Cosmic Invasion are shown booting, with Xbox controller input and audio in some titles. Quake II runs at roughly 25–45 FPS.
Uenal starts publishing Xbox builds through the official KytyPS5 GitHub releases. A PS5-style launcher UI appears, with titles like Crash Bandicoot 4, GTA V and Gran Turismo 7 listed as in testing.
Direct3D 12 renderer fixes (~15 new handled cases), GPU memory savings on by default, faster .zar loading, startup fixes and 173 upstream KytyPS5 changes.
Short answers: Developer Mode is an official Microsoft feature, and emulators are generally legal — but you must use legally obtained game files and download only from official sources.
PS5X runs inside Xbox Developer Mode. The whole setup takes roughly 30–60 minutes, including the Microsoft Partner Center registration. Follow the steps in order.
Go to the Microsoft Partner Center registration page (developer.microsoft.com → Store → Register) and sign in with your Microsoft account. Choose the Individual account type, fill in your profile and billing details, and pay the one-time registration fee.
Wait until the dashboard confirms your developer account is active before continuing. Keep track of which Microsoft account you used — the console activation will require the same one.
On your Xbox, open the Microsoft Store and search for Xbox Dev Mode (on Series X|S, install the green-icon app). Install and launch it. The app will display an activation code — write it down.
On your PC, open the activation URL shown in the app, then sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the developer account:
https://aka.ms/activatexboxEnter the activation code from your console and confirm. If the code expired or was rejected, open the Dev Mode app again to generate a new one. If you see "not authorized," you are almost certainly signed in with a different Microsoft account.
Back on the Xbox, select Switch and restart in the Dev Mode app. The console reboots into Developer Mode — the first boot is noticeably slower, which is normal. Do not unplug the console during this step.
On the Developer Mode dashboard (Dev Home), allocate storage for development apps (at least 5GB) and make sure the console is connected to your network.
In Dev Home, open Settings → Remote Access and enable the Xbox Device Portal. For security, tick "Require authentication" and set a username and password. Dev Home displays a local network address (for example, http://192.168.1.50:11443) — you will use it from your PC browser.
On your PC, go to the official KytyPS5 site and GitHub releases:
https://kytyps5.github.io/ github.com/KytyPS5/KytyPS5 → ReleasesDownload the latest Xbox build (the release name looks like "KytyPS5 for Xbox" — the build covered in this guide is 1.1.26291.1739). Extract the archive; you should have a package file (.appx or .msixbundle) plus possibly dependency files.
.appx / .msixbundle file (and its dependencies if requested) and click Start. In Dev Home, set the app type of the PS5X package to Game (View details → App type → Game) and restart the console. Then launch PS5X from the Dev Home app list.
eboot.bin).To play your normal Xbox games again: open Dev Home → Leave Dev Mode, and the console restarts in Retail Mode. Note that retail games and apps do not run while in Developer Mode, and switching modes clears Quick Resume states and local captures — sync saves to Xbox cloud before switching.
Everything below is sourced from the developer's public demonstrations, release notes and reports from Windows Central and other outlets, as of October 19, 2026. Status changes fast — check the official releases for the newest builds.
The rest of the PS5 library (including all big exclusives) is not yet supported. The 5GB Developer Mode memory cap and the DirectX translation layer are the two main blockers.

The questions people actually ask about PS5 games on Xbox hardware — answered with the facts as of October 2026.
PS5X is a real research project by developer Devran Cosmo Uenal — a port of the open-source KytyPS5 PlayStation 5 emulator to Xbox Series X|S. Public experimental builds have been available since October 2026 through the official KytyPS5 GitHub releases. Scams are common in emulation, so only download from the official KytyPS5 site and GitHub, never from third-party "PS5X download" pages.
Yes. Experimental Xbox builds are published through the official KytyPS5 GitHub releases page. The build covered in this guide is KytyPS5 for Xbox 1.1.26291.1739 (October 18, 2026). You also need Xbox Developer Mode activated on your console to run it.
Emulators are generally legal in most regions when they do not include copyrighted code. PS5X does not bundle PS5 firmware or decryption keys. What is not legal is piracy: only use game files you obtained legally, such as backups of games you own. Sony could still take action against the project, as it has with other emulation projects.
No. Developer Mode is an official Microsoft feature for retail consoles and you can switch back to Retail Mode at any time; your games and saves are not deleted. Bans are tied to policy violations — Microsoft banned retail-mode emulation workarounds in 2023, and piracy or bypassing security can put your account and console at risk. Using Developer Mode as documented is generally safe.
Four titles are confirmed demonstrated: Quake II, GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd and Marvel Cosmic Invasion, with Astro's Playroom reported booting. No PS5 exclusive has been demonstrated yet, and larger titles generally fail because of Developer Mode's 5GB memory cap.
Early and experimental. Quake II runs at roughly 20–45 FPS in the developer's footage, with dips below 20 FPS and noticeable input lag. Astro's Playroom was reported at around 10 FPS on Series X. Expect proof-of-concept results, not a polished experience.
In Developer Mode, Microsoft caps games at 5GB of foreground memory (apps at 1GB), while retail Series X games can use 13.5GB of the console's 16GB. PS5X uses paging, a swap file and texture-quality options to fit inside the budget, but big current-gen games cannot run within the cap — and there is no workaround without a jailbreak.
The builds are advertised for Xbox Series X|S, but the fork's documentation focuses on Series X, and Series S compatibility and performance are not yet verified.
No. You need legally obtained PS5 game files (backups of games you own) and Xbox Developer Mode activated, which requires a one-time Microsoft Partner Center developer account registration fee (about US$19, varies by region).
Unknown. Xbox compatibility only advances when each KytyPS5 fix is re-adapted for DirectX 12 and fits the 5GB memory budget. Follow the official KytyPS5 releases; there is no date.
